koine

The form of Greek (koine = common) which was the international language after the death of Alexander the Great (323 BCE) both in cities of Greece and throughout the Hellenistic world. It is a simplified form of the Attic Greek in which the dialogues of Plato and the classical tragedies were written. It was the natural vehicle for all the writers of the NT and even for the Church in Rome until it was superseded by Latin by the end of the 2nd cent. CE. See languages.
